I’ve feel fortunate to have become a freelancer doing work that I enjoy. Freelancing has give me the perfect work/life balance. But, I’ve worked hard to get here…
I grew up in St Austell in Cornwall where I went to school and college. I then went to Bournemouth University to study for a BA (Hons) in Business Studies. This course was a 4 year course which meant that I took a year out in industry where I worked for Xerox at their manufacturing plant in Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire.
When I left University, I was lucky to get a job at Serco Defence and Aerospace in Hook, Hampshire where I held the positions of Project Co-ordinator, Marketing Executive and Data Manager. I was fortunate to work alongside many leading companies while working there including working in a consortium with BAE Systems, Boeing and Spectrum Capital. I also travelled all over the UK in these positions and visited Oman in my capacity of Data Manager for a project that was looking to build a technological college in the country.
During my time at Serco Defence and Aerospace, I completed a Masters in Marketing with eCommerce which the company supported me through. I did this on a part-time basis and achieved a first class degree with distinction.
After five and a half years working at Serco Defence and Aerospace and completing my Masters, I decided that I wanted to get involved with an online business and specifically online marketing.
I left Serco to join eTeach who were a recruitment solution for educational establishments based in Camberley, Surrey. I worked in the marketing department and specifically worked on SEO, PPC and email marketing. I was also responsible for writing on and offline marketing material.
I stayed at eTeach for a year but was looking for an opportunity which gave me responsibility for running and managing a website myself. I was lucky to move to the Website & SEO Manager position at Golfbreaks.com in Windsor.
At Golfbreaks.com I managed a small team and was responsible for the website, search engine optimisation and the user’s journey. During my time at Golfbreaks.com, I also carried out this roll for their sister website, TeeOffTimes.co.uk. I worked on a major company rebrand, website redesign and SEO project to achieve more online success for the company.
However, I still had a desire to do something else and realised that I wanted to work for myself and become a freelancer. I realised that I would be able to work across a plethora of different industries if I did this. So, after nearly 3 years in the role I decided to leave. It is a decision that I never have regretted.
…and so 10 years on… here I am, still working as a freelancer and enjoying my decision.
Thanks to my family who supported me when I decided to take the leap into freelancing and to my husband who always encourages me. My passion to achieve is still there, the only thing different from when I decided to become a freelancer to now is that I now have two kids in tow…
